Old bottles of Champagne.

Have you found some old bottles of Champagne and/or wine at home and you would like to know if they are worth any money and get some more information on them? Homes up and down the country, thanks to the hoarding nature of a smaller percentage of the population (2-5% of the population may be affected), can see several bottles of wines and spirits tucked away in cupboards / drawers / under the stairs / in the loft area / in the garage / in the cellar. The good news is that some of these old bottles of Champagne might hold some value!

Common reasons why we have undrunk bottles of Champagne, wine and spirits at home include:

  • Gifts / prize that we do not really want.
  • We've stopped drinking alcohol.
  • We found out the bottle was worth a lot of money and were afraid to open the bottle(s).
  • They were left in someone's will to us or found during sorting out a family member / friends estate.
  • Purchased as part of a bigger lot.
  • We do not like this style of wine / label.
  • "I can't quite remember how I came to own it".

Whatever the reason why, you find yourself with surplus to requirement bottle(s) of Champagne - Next step is to find out if it is worthwhile trying to sell, so the following questions must be asked:

  • What Champagne label do you actually have? Names to look out for include Salon / Krug / Dom Pérignon / Cristal / Pol Roger Winston Churchill / Comtes. Re-sale value of bottles of Champagne can be as low as zero to several £1,000's.
  • What condition is the bottle in to include how was it stored? Poorly stored bottles will usually show a darker shade of colour to the wine inside the bottle, mucky clarity and a lower wine level. There will be a vast difference in price for bottles in perfect condition to those which were not stored correctly and the wine inside the bottle is unlikely to perform.

What age is your bottle of Champagne? Most Champagne will be non-vintage and harder to tell exactly what year they were produced and released. The more collectable and valuable Champagne will be vintage labels and a vintage year will be marked on the bottle most likely being on the front label, on the neck area or a separate mini badge mid neck level. Only vintage Champagnes, wines made from the grape juice of one exceptional year only, will be marked with a year.
