How much is Krug Champagne worth?

One of the most popular questions I get asked is about values of Krug Champagne. Following the creation of the Champagne Collectors Facebook group, and more recently the auction website dedicated to vintage Champagne, our increasing email enquiries tend to see a common trend in questions:

Questions that seem to surface frequently which we get at Champagne Collectors are:

  1. Is this Champagne worth anything?
  2. Can you tell me if this Champagne is old and is it valuable?
  3. Is old Krug / Dom Perignon / Cristal worth a lot of money and is it still drinkable?
  4. Does Champagne go off as I have these bottles?
  5. We found this/these bottles when we were clearing out our relative's property, do people buy these still?

Most of the questions we get are from consumers and we are always pleased to advise and when applicable, make an offer and / or suggest to list the vintage Champagne free of charge via our website. There must be 10,000's of not 100,000's of vintage bottles of Champagne hidden away in homes across the UK waiting to be rediscovered!

For any collector of Champagne, the word Krug will for sure grab their attention. Whenever I have attended media/press Champagne tastings, such as those at LVMH offices in London, it's the Krug icebucket that will hold the greater audience and empty glasses being pointed at the server. If you are looking to sell Krug Champagne then initially you are in a good position because of the high demand for this label, but the value will undoutedly be down to the storage history and condition of the wine inside the bottle - If values are high for perfect bottles, then equally the prices are negatively high if condition has been comprmised.

Though a search on Google to give an indication of value is sensible, note that most live auctions are from re-sellers / wine merchants who give an assurance of quality so the wine being sold is likely to be in the best possible performance condition - Delve deeper into Google searches, away from the top few search results, and check the past auction listings and their sold prices where you will notice a big difference. With Krug Champagne, it is all about the performance of the wine for today and for many years to come so if you take away the performance then you strip the most important factor that gives it its high valuations.

What labels do Champagne Krug produce?

There are six labels that Krug produce and each is highly respected. Krug is seen by many within the Champagne industry as the pinnacle of quality and desirability. Waited on with much anticipation each new release, a global, growing appreciation and admiration gives it a cemented name within the luxurious lifestyle communities (source Glass of Bubbly).

  1. Grand Cuvée
  2. Krug Rosé
  3. Krug Vintage
  4. Krug Clos du Mesnil
  5. Krug Clos d’Ambonnay
  6. Krug Collection

The highest value and valued label from Krug is the Krug Clos d’Ambonnay as it is made from a tiny vineyard of 0.68 ha and only a very vintages of this blanc de noirs have been released and bottles produced. Behind it is the blanc de blancs of Krug Clos du Mesnil with again a small vineyard of 1.84 ha supplying the grapes for this wine and a production estimated at around 8000-14000 bottles. Next in line will be the Krug Collection which are later release vintage labels and only released upon being deemed perfection to be released by the current cellar master. We now move to the Krug Vintage range released only after ten years or more in the cellars at Reims, these label are highly sort after and available only during exceptional harvest years. The Krug Rosé comes next as rosé are always more popular than their white counterpart with leaves the Krug Grande Cuvée, a mixture of vintage blends, being the least valuable.
